Chapter Thirteen
Annabelle talked to the accounting manager, George Conrad, and explained about what had happened the night before. George had been with another Castle store down in Houston for twenty years, and he’d seen it all.
“I think you’re wise to get ahead of this, Annabelle,” George replied. He wore snazzy black glasses and had salt-and-pepper hair, a real gentleman. “Eleanor recommended you, and her word is good enough for me. Her father gave me my big break despite my bad resume, when he put me in charge of the credit department in a start-up Castle’s years ago. I’m here today because I like the smaller size of this store, and I’m ready to head toward retirement. We bought a nice house on a lake near our grandchildren.”
Already comfortable with George, she said, “So I’ll arrange the press conference for later this afternoon, and Daphne will be there to make sure things go smoothly. I’d like the staff members we have training to attend, too.”
“We’ll make it happen,” George said. “Beat these news hounds at their own game. And hopefully, get some good press for the store.”
“That’s the idea,” she said, feeling better. “Meantime, I have interviews with several people who’ve worked in display and visual merchandising. I hope to have a team together late next week.”
“Good. We have applicants coming in for all kinds of positions. Hope you have a good turnout.”
Annabelle called five different newspapers and three television stations. Then she interviewed four people, three women and one man, for positions in visual merchandising and retail displays.
One woman had no experience, but she kept smiling at Annabelle. “I can’t believe it’s really you,” she finally said, her smile gleaming with a conspiring clarity.
“What do you mean?” Annabelle asked, her smile not so beaming.
“I saw you in all the papers. You Castles, y’all are like the Kardashians of Dallas, right?”
“I’m not a Kardashian,” Annabelle replied. “And … you are not hired.”
The girl left in a huff, but not before she tried to snap a selfie with Annabelle.
The lone male sat down and handed her a portfolio, his blue eyes serious and his suit hip with millennium-grade attitude. “I’m Jared Henderson, and I want to work for you.”
“Why?” she asked, checking for hidden cameras.
“My mama used to take me to Castle’s every Saturday. We’d have ice cream in the Castle’s Chocolates Café. Then she’d buy me clothes and shoes, or we’d walk around the store and go to the downtown library. I always loved the displays at Castle’s. And that mural in shoes. Amazing. I majored in art and minored in design at Baylor. I can draw, paint, and build and help you create displays. I’ve studied your style, and I know I can be an asset.”
“You’re over-qualified and you have more degrees than I do,” Annabelle said, impressed with his previous positions at three different well-known boutiques. “Why are you here?”
He pulled at his spiky blonde hair and said, “My mama died about five months ago, and I’m an only child.
